With every hat pattern I've posted, I receive several emails and comments requesting the hat in a different size. Okay, so I have written this one for a baby, toddler, and young child. I wanted to make a slouchy beanie with a big pompom. It is a beanie that slides over to the possibility of being a beret but I didn't give it enough slouch to be a good floppy beret which is how I like them. This is a beanie with a touch of attitude. I think pompoms are a prerequisite of childhood, especially big colorful ones.
You will need:
2 balls of worsted yarn, so approx 150 - 300 yards total.
an Extra ball of yarn in contrasting color for the pompom.
size 8 - 16" circular needles (yes, this hat must be made on circular, it won't work well on straights.)
4 size 8 double pointed needles
Guage: 4 sts, 6 rows per inch, stockinette in the round
2x2 rib= K2, p2, repeat until the end
stockinette in the round= Knit every round.
The pattern is written with baby size (toddler, young child), so 16"(18", 20") circumferences
Cast on 64 (72 sts, 80 sts). Place a stitch marker. Join ring and knit in a 2x2 rib for one inch. The rib is loose and not firm. HINT: If you want a firmer rib, then cast on initially with a size 6 circular before switching to the size 8 needles for the rest of the hat.
Work stockinette in the round for one inch.
Increase round: Every two stitches M1, continue this process all the way around. You will have 96 (108, 120).
Work stockinette in the round for 4 inches. When you have reached 4 inches, add a stitch marker after every 8th (9th, 10 stitch). Complete this round.
Decrease Round: Continuing in stockinette stitch, K2tog before every stitch marker. Switch to the double pointed needles when it becomes too tight. Continue to decrease in this manner for every round until you have only 8 stitches remaining.
Cut a 6" tail, thread it on a tapestry needle, run the needle through the remaining stitches and pull tight. This will cinch the top closed.
Using your favorite pompom maker, make pompom that is 3" in diameter. Tie it onto the top of the beanie.
Weave in all tails.
