Medicine Man - 2016 to date
This is a work in progress. These are the first 7 of over 200 bottles I've collected since 2014 when I had what I call my series of medical woes, resulting in weeks of hospitalization and much medicine. I find these bottles rather remarkable. They contain magic, the magic to keep me alive. I bead the bottles turning them into miniature reliquaries. In today's society, the doctor is at the top of the pyramid with his or her power over life and death. The root for Bead is Bede which means prayer. These little reliquaries once contained tablets taken to give me lmore time to enjoy my life. They are in a sense an answer to my prayers.
Empty nesting elicits a range of emotions including pride, happiness, loneliness and a sense of being stuck in a holding pattern. Children grow up, mature, and move on while Mom continues to live in the same place doing the same thing she’s always done. But no matter our baby’s age, our baby is still our baby. Mom’s are expected to step forward whenever called upon, yet blend into the background the rest of the time. It is an unfair societal expectation that keeps the apron strings firmly chained in place. Apron strings that hold the mother and child equally tied together.
I chose to explore this mixture of emotions through knitting. When a baby is expected, family and friends get out their needles to create a plethora of items, each an expression of love and hope for the future. These same items are in turn passed down among the generations as treasured expressions of love.
